    Radio Resource Management for Cellular Networks Enhanced by Inter-User Communication

    The importance of radio resource management will be more and more emphasized in future wireless communication systems. For fair penetration of wireless services and for improved local services, inter-user communication has been receiving wide attention as it opens up various possibilities for user cooperation. The capability of inter-user communication imposes higher demands on radio resource management as additional considerations are needed. The demands for intelligent management of radio resources is also emphasized by the sparsity of radio resources. As the available spectral resources are assessed as under-utilized, much effort is devoted to developing advanced resource management methods for improving the spectral usage efficiency. The research of this thesis has contributed to the radio resource management for cellular networks enhanced by inter-user communication. Recognizing that inter-user communication can be used for message relaying or for direct communication purposes, two use cases are considered that leverage the synergy of users: cooperative relay selection and Device-to-Device (D2D) communication. We identify the importance of stochastic geometry consideration on cellular users for evaluating system performance in cooperative networking. We develop an algorithm for efficiently selecting cooperative users to maximize an End-to-End (e2e) performance metric. We analyze the optimal resource sharing problem between D2D communication and infrastructure-supported communication. We study the impact of imperfect Channel State Information (CSI) on the performance of systems with inter-user communication. Simulation results show that the performance of users with unfavorable propagation conditions can be improved with cooperative communication in a multi-cell cellular environment, at the expense of radio resources. Further, our results show that the selection of multiple cooperative users is beneficial in cases where the candidate cooperative users are spatially distributed. For resource sharing between the D2D and infrastructure-supported communication, our results show that the proposed resource sharing scheme enables higher intra-cell resource reuse without blocking the infrastructure-supported communication

    High-Mobility Pentacene-Based Thin-Film Transistors With a Solution-Processed Barium Titanate Insulator

    Abstract—Pentacene-based organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) with solution-processed barium titanate (Ba1.2Ti0.8O3) as a gate insulator are demonstrated. The electrical properties of pentacene-based TFTs show a high field-effect mobility of 8.85 cm2 · V−1 · s−1, a low threshold voltage of −1.89 V, and a low subthreshold slope swing of 310 mV/decade. The chemical composition and binding energy of solution-processed barium titanate thin films are analyzed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The matching surface energy on the surface of the barium titanate thin film is 43.12 mJ · m−2, which leads to Stranski–Krastanov mode growth, and thus, high mobility is exhibited in pentacene-based TFTs. However, there are signs that this symbiotic growth is slowing down. We developed a model and tested 14 hypotheses.     A multinorm one torus associated to a commutative \'etale algebra LL over a global field kk is of Kummer type if each factor of LL is a cyclic Kummer extension. In this paper we compute the Tate-Shafarevich group of such tori based on recent works of Bayer-Fluckiger, T.-Y. Lee and Parimala, and of T.-Y.~Lee.     Phosphorous Diffuser Diverged Blue Laser Diode for Indoor Lighting and Communication.

    An advanced light-fidelity (Li-Fi) system based on the blue Gallium nitride (GaN) laser diode (LD) with a compact white-light phosphorous diffuser is demonstrated for fusing the indoor white-lighting and visible light communication (VLC). The phosphorous diffuser adhered blue GaN LD broadens luminescent spectrum and diverges beam spot to provide ample functionality including the completeness of Li-Fi feature and the quality of white-lighting. The phosphorous diffuser diverged white-light spot covers a radiant angle up to 120(o) with CIE coordinates of (0.34, 0.37). On the other hand, the degradation on throughput frequency response of the blue LD is mainly attributed to the self-feedback caused by the reflection from the phosphor-air interface. It represents the current state-of-the-art performance on carrying 5.2-Gbit/s orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed 16-quadrature-amplitude modulation (16-QAM OFDM) data with a bit error rate (BER) of 3.1 × 10(-3) over a 60-cm free-space link.     Regulation of CLC-1 chloride channel biosynthesis by FKBP8 and Hsp90β.

    Mutations in human CLC-1 chloride channel are associated with the skeletal muscle disorder myotonia congenita. The disease-causing mutant A531V manifests enhanced proteasomal degradation of CLC-1. We recently found that CLC-1 degradation is mediated by cullin 4 ubiquitin ligase complex. It is currently unclear how quality control and protein degradation systems coordinate with each other to process the biosynthesis of CLC-1. Herein we aim to ascertain the molecular nature of the protein quality control system for CLC-1. We identified three CLC-1-interacting proteins that are well-known heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90)-associated co-chaperones: FK506-binding protein 8 (FKBP8), activator of Hsp90 ATPase homolog 1 (Aha1), and Hsp70/Hsp90 organizing protein (HOP). These co-chaperones promote both the protein level and the functional expression of CLC-1 wild-type and A531V mutant. CLC-1 biosynthesis is also facilitated by the molecular chaperones Hsc70 and Hsp90β. The protein stability of CLC-1 is notably increased by FKBP8 and the Hsp90β inhibitor 17-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-AAG) that substantially suppresses cullin 4 expression. We further confirmed that cullin 4 may interact with Hsp90β and FKBP8. Our data are consistent with the idea that FKBP8 and Hsp90β play an essential role in the late phase of CLC-1 quality control by dynamically coordinating protein folding and degradation

    A Distributed Query Protocol in Wireless Sensor Networks

    Abstract. In wireless sensor networks, query execution over a specific geographical region is an essential function for collecting sensed data. However, sensor nodes deployed in sensor networks have limited battery power. Hence, the minimum number of connected sensor nodes that covers the queried region in a sensor network must be determined. This paper proposes an efficient distributed protocol to find a subset of connected sensor nodes to cover the queried region. Each node determines whether to be a sensing node to sense the queried region according to its priority. The proposed protocol can efficiently construct a subset of connected sensing nodes and respond the query request to the sink node. In addition, the proposed protocol is extended to solve the k-coverage request. Simulation results show that our protocol is more efficient and has a lower communication overhead than the existing protocol
